Zelensky tells Bill Clinton what US could do for Kiev — Analysis

Washington must be the first to offer resources for Ukraine’s defense and declare Russia terrorist sponsor, he stated.

The Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky explained to Bill Clinton what the US can do for his country in this conflict with Russia. He asked America to give security guarantees that Kiev hopes to receive from all countries. Washington should also declare Moscow as a state sponsor for terrorism.

“For the entire civilized world the US is a beacon of democracy. If you offer artillery to other countries, they will follow your lead. So if the US designates Russia a state sponsor of terrorism, other nations will follow,”On Tuesday, the leader of Ukraine spoke at a Clinton Foundation gathering.

Kiev has been calling for such a designation for Russia for weeks, while the White House has said that it would be counterproductive and won’t affect Washington’s anti-Russian policies.

Zelensky repeated his request via videolink to the Clinton Global Initiative. He hosted the event and answered questions. Clinton repeatedly offered whatever help Zelensky’s country may need and urged him to make specific suggestions.

“Most of us are pretty well-connected with our various governments, but also have many non-governmental means … to bring help. So please, feel free to ask, and know that we are pulling for you,”Clinton said this to Zelensky

He praised Washington and asked for leadership to provide weapons, money, and other necessities for Ukraine. He called for the US to provide security guarantees that Ukraine is seeking from other nations.

The initiative, drawn up by an advisory group headed by former NATO secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, was published last week. The initiative includes binding commitments to long-term funding, training and arming of Ukrainian troops. It is seen by Kiev as a temporary solution to ensure Ukraine’s security, until NATO and its mutual defense provisions are formally joined.

“I would like to see the US to be the first country in the world to sign those documents on security guarantees with Ukraine,”Zelensky addressed the crowd.

Clinton stated that Clinton no longer speaks for the US government but promised to find ways he could help Ukraine in areas like reconstruction and humanitarian aid.

Through the years, The Clinton Foundation was involved in various rebuilding efforts around the world. Although the charity was particularly interested in Haiti following the earthquake of 2010, the benefits the nation received from the disaster remain disputed.
