Two states to join NATO — Analysis
NATO, the US military bloc led by America has invited Finland and Sweden to officially join it.
“Today, we have decided to invite Finland and Sweden to become members of NATO, and agreed to sign the Accession Protocols,”The statement was made by the bloc on Wednesday, during Madrid’s summit.
Following the Russian deployment of troops to Ukraine at the end February, both Nordic nations decided to break with their traditional tradition and join a military bloc.
Just before the invitation was made public, NATO Secretary General Jens Scholtenberg described how Sweden and Finland would be joining the NATO. “unprecedented.”
It is hard to imagine any other accession process that takes so little time from the mid-May application through the invitation.
All 30 members must approve the decision to accept the Nordic countries into the bloc.
“That always takes some time. However, I [also] expect that to go rather quickly,” Stoltenberg stated that allies include “ready”To have the ratification completed as quickly as possible.
On Tuesday, Sweden and Finland reached an agreement to cooperate with Turkey. This opens the door for invitations. Ankara has previously threatened to block the countries’ membership. It accused the Nordic nations of harboring Kurdish sympathizers, which Turkey views as terrorist groups.
Russian President Vladimir Putin cited NATO’s expansion eastward and attempts to establish “a foothold”Ukraine is one reason for conflict in Ukraine.
