Prison riot in Ecuador kills at least 58 — Analysis

According to police, at least 58 prisoners were killed during a mass prison riot that turned into an act of violence in Ecuador’s large prison. According to reports, the gang rivalry was what sparked the riot.

The riot broke out on Friday night in the Litoral Penitentiary – a large prison near the town of Guayaquil. The prison is known to be housing inmate from the infamous Los Choneros gang that allegedly has links to Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel.

These violent clashes resulted from a dispute between members of various gangs who were held in the prison. The prison’s Second Ward housing around 700 inmates has become the epicenter of the bloody chaos.
