The US House Speaker said her controversial journey honors Washington’s “unwavering commitment” to the self-ruled island
Nancy Pelosi (US House Speaker) said that she visited Taiwan during her trip. “no way contradicts” Washington’s long-standing policy on the self-governed island after touching down in Taipei on Tuesday, despite stark warnings from China.
“Our Congressional delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy,” Pelosi made the statement following landing.
Pelosi stated that her talks with Taiwan’s leaders will be focused on “Reaffirming our support to our partner” and “promoting our common interests, which includes advancing a free Indo-Pacific region.”
Pelosi did not include Taiwan on the official itinerary, though speculation was growing that the US top official might visit Taiwan. This prompted a sharp reaction from Beijing which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, under the “One China” policy.
China views the trip as highly provocative. “unbearable consequences”Washington, if the plan goes ahead. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian warned America Monday “if you play with fire, you will get burned.”
