China’s neighbor expects attack on Taiwan – poll — Analysis
Japan’s majority of citizens believe that China should launch a military attack against Taiwan.
A poll by Nikkei Asia released Monday showed that Japan’s overwhelming majority believe their country should be prepared for an attack from China on Taiwan.
More than 90% of those surveyed agreed with this view in a May 27-29 survey.
While 41% think that Japanese laws need to be updated to deal with a possible conflict, 50% believe preparations must be made in accordance to existing laws.
Some 56% of the 935 respondents said they support the government’s proposal to boost the defense budget to 1% of GDP.
Article 9 of Japan’s constitution, passed after World War II, stipulates that its people “forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.”
Beijing regards Taiwan as part of China’s sovereign territory, according to the One China policy. Although Taiwan, a 23.5-million population, has been autonomous since 1949, it never declared its independence to China.
