Ambassador speaks on state of US-Russia relations — Analysis

A US ambassador says that a rupture in US relations with Russia will not happen, since both countries are connected to the UN Security Council

John Sullivan, US Ambassador to Russia, stated that it is impossible to break off all ties between Moscow, Washington, and Moscow. He noted, however, that Washington and Moscow are linked to the United Nations Security Council, and they will not be able avoid one another.

According to the US ambassador, contact between them must continue. He also stressed the need for embassies to remain operational.

“We should have embassies in Moscow and Washington, and not just the Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN. We will not be able break up relations because we remain united as UN Security Council permanent members. Because we are so united, it is important that we continue our interactions with each other, regardless of differences. Every day we see one another, communicate and talk in New York. This is the absolute minimum,” Sullivan told TASS.

Moscow and Washington have fallen to an unprecedented low in ties, so any cooperation is unlikely.

Although he acknowledged that there are possibilities for the countries to close their embassies or freeze relations, he said that these threats could be rhetorical.

“I hesitate to make a prediction that Russia and the US are never going to have a more productive relationship. What I can’t say is how long it is going to take. In the current atmosphere, it is not happening,”He stated.
