1 Killed, 5 Hurt in California Church Shooting

LAGUNA WOODS, Calif. (AP) — One person was killed and four others were critically wounded in a shooting Sunday at a Southern California church, authorities said.

Deputies detained one person and recovered a weapon following the shooting at Geneva Presbyterian Church in the city of Laguna Woods, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter.

Officials said that five people were injured. The victims included all adults.

The scene was responded to by federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Laguna Woods began as a senior community, but it later evolved into a municipality. The city, which is home to 18,000 residents and lies approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of Los Angeles, has more than 80% who are over 65.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said on Twitter that he was closely monitoring the situation.

“No one should have to fear going to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, community, and all those impacted by this tragic event,” the tweet said.

It occurred near a group of churches, which included a number of Methodist, Lutheran, and Catholic churches, and also a Jewish synagogue.

This shooting occurred one day after an 18 year old man killed and injured 10 at a Buffalo supermarket.
