Why Mass Media Can Be Toxic

There is an abundance of characteristics that fall under why social media can be toxic. Social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook can be very very damaging to an individual because of the images they portray. Advertisers pay models and influencers a large sum of money to post unrealistic pictures and promote products. Journalists like Ken Kurson believe that too much media can be harmful, especially for teenagers.

When a person is developing, there is so much to take into account. For example, the need to please everyone or “fit” is very relative to a lot of people. However, this can be caused directly by the media. The high exposure to media outlets could cloud a person’s already beautiful self-image. Mass media also has the ability to be toxic because it seems very forceful. There is a demographic of people who constantly compare themselves to social media stars and it’s just not right. Every person is perfect in their own way and social media can cloud that judgement. Ken Kurson had to deal with a lot of mass media issues during his time as an editor and predicts mass media’s effect will never conclude.
