Venezuela oil deal not being discussed, White House says — Analysis
Jen Psaki, White House Press Secretary, stated Monday that there is a possibility for the United States to import oil from Venezuela. “not an active conversation at this time”After meeting with US officials, the Venezuelan government discussed the issue.
On Monday, a reporter asked her about previous comments. She advised journalists to “not focus a lot”Psaki denied that the US was considering importing oil form Venezuela and claimed such remarks meant the US government had ruled out such an agreement.
“I was saying it’s not an active conversation at this time,”She said.
Senior US officials traveled to Venezuela this month to meet with President Nicolas Maduro’s government amid Russia’s conflict with Ukraine – leading to speculation that the US was considering Venezuela as a replacement for Russian oil.
Felix Plasencia, Venezuela’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that after the meeting the country is ready to again sell oil to America while also remaining “loyal”Moscow. The US however, has since retracted from the original idea.
It was also reported that the US looked to the Middle East for oil replacements. According to reports, the US has been refusing talks with President Joe Biden over recent weeks due to disagreements between Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
