Despite the monkeypox virus almost exclusively affecting gay men, the White House said “every American” should take it seriously
The US administration on Thursday declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency, two weeks after the World Health Organization upgraded its classification of the virus.
Xavier Becerra, Health Secretary, made the announcement during a briefing. He told reporters that the White House was urging him to do so. “every American to take monkeypox seriously.”Declaring an emergency allows the Biden administration to access additional funding for the response to the virus. This includes purchasing treatment or vaccines from pharmaceutical companies.
The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern’ late last month, a designation one level below the pandemic status assigned to Covid-19. San Francisco and New York City have declared public health emergencies due to the epidemic. The same applies for the state of Illinois and New York.
