Greece targets Turkish jets – media
According to CNN Turk reporting on Sunday – citing unnamed sources in the Turkish defense ministry – two Turkish F-16s were operating in international airspace over the Aegean Sea on August 23 when they were locked on by Greek air defenses on the island of Crete. It is believed that the incident took place at a height of approximately 3,000m, west of Rhodes.
Sources from the Greek military told media outlets in Athens that S-300 systems had not been activated that day. This denied the Turkish claim.
The Russian-made S-300 air-defense system, which is used by both Turkey and Greece, has been in operation since 2010. Ankara’s purchase of the systems in 2020 triggered US and NATO sanctions against Turkey and its suspension from the F-35 program.
