Tower block catches fire in Istanbul (VIDEOS) — Analysis

Istanbul, Turkey: Saturday night saw an apartment building set on fire. The flames lit all 24 floors and engulfed the entire city with smoke. This fire took place in the same neighborhood that was also hit by an explosion last Wednesday.

Oda TV reported the incident in which the fire began in an apartment in Fikirtepe. After starting on one of the apartment block’s lower floors, it quickly climbed to the top of the building, the Turkish network added.

Video sharing on social media revealed a fire column that burned up the side of the building. This could be a shaft or stairway.

Firefighters quickly put out the flames and evacuated the apartment block. The cause of the fire is not known.

A week and a half after an explosion at a Fikirtepe three-story building killed three, the fire broke out in the same area. Initially blamed for a gas leak the explosion was later discovered to have been caused by a terrorist who had pipe bombs made in his apartment. Investigators suspect that the fuse was accidentally lit and detonated gunpowder.
