Local media reports that the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is set to resign next week. Rajapaksa had earlier fled his home in Colombo, as protestors surrounded the building.
Rajapaksa’s resignation was announced by Sri Lankan news outlet Newsfirst, which cited Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena. After Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that he also would like to quit, Rajapaksa’s resignation was made. It opened the doors for elections and an interim government.
