Pelosi names destinations of her trip amid Taiwan row — Analysis
In her latest Asia trip update, the US House speaker didn’t mention the island.
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives has released the itinerary for her trip in Asia. China promised to retaliate strongly if the politician of high rank visits Taiwan.
Pelosi tweeted Sunday that she would stop by Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea. “hold high-level meetings.”
This news follows reports that Pelosi may make an unannounced trip to Taipei.
China views Taiwan, which was ruled independently since the 1940s, as part of its territory. Beijing opposes all diplomatic recognition of Taiwan. This includes visits from foreign officials.

In a phone conversation on Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned his US counterpart, Joe Biden against visits to Taiwan and recognizing the island’s “independence.”
“Those who play with fire will perish by it. It is hoped that the US will be clear-eyed about this,”According to official readings of the conference call, Xi stated his opinion.
While not formally recognizing Taiwan as an independent nation, the US has been supporting the island’s government by selling weapons to Taipei.
