Most of the migrants were from sub-Saharan Africa. They claimed that their detention centers guards tortured and beat them. Then they extorted money for their families, allegedly in return for their release. They had evidence of recent and older injuries to their bodies and were covered in bullet and knife marks on their arms, backs and faces.
