Paris braces for ‘Freedom Convoy’ (VIDEOS) — Analysis
French authorities prepared barriers and deployed armored cars to protest the anti-Covid restrictions.
Paris police prepared on Friday for the arrival of the so-called ‘Freedom Convoy’ which is due to arrive in the French capital later that same day. According to authorities, “special machines would be utilized”to stop the protestors, already expelled from Paris, from blocking Paris.
On videos posted online, you can see armored cars arriving at the French capital. Local media cites police sources as saying that other hardware like cranes, riot vehicles and tow trucks will be deployed.
In other footage, police tow trucks can be seen hauling metal fencing while officers position them along Paris’ wide streets.
Around seven convoys of trucks from various French regions are due to arrive at the capital on Friday, around 8pm. According to French media, organizers will announce a location for the meeting shortly before they arrive in the capital.
The ‘Freedom Convoy’ is a response to France’s Covid-19 restrictions, including the continued use of the vaccine pass. Inspired by Canada’s events, truckers protested a mandate that drivers cross-borderly get vaccines. This inspired broader activism.
On Thursday, Paris authorities issued an order prohibiting the Canada-style ‘Freedom Convoy’ from the city over the weekend. This ban will continue until Monday. Those objecting or hindering road access could face a heavy penalty of two years’ imprisonment and a fine of €4,500 ($5,150).
