New York governor hopeful attacked on stage — Analysis

The culprit was detained after assaulting US Rep. Lee Zeldin with a “sharp object”

Lee Zeldin was an attack victim at a Rochester campaign event. Zeldin is the Republican candidate in New York’s next gubernatorial race. The perpetrator was filmed jumping on stage and assaulting Zeldin with a “sharp object”According to eyewitnesses

Initial reports stated that the suspect was equipped with a knife. He allegedly attempted to steal his weapon. “stab” the politician, some photos shared on Twitter showed that the weapon appeared to be brass knuckles with spikes.

“Fortunately, I was able to grab his wrist and stop him for a few moments until others tackled him,”Zeldin confirmed that he was not suffering from any serious injuries in a statement cited AP.

Multiple videos of the incident shared on Twitter show the attacker walking onto the stage and starting a scuffle with the congressman, before both of them fall to the ground as people around rush to help. 

While the attacker was being held in custody and apprehended, Congressman moved on with his speech.

“This could have really ended in a horrible way tonight and this is unacceptable,” said state GOP Chair Nick Langworthy. He called on Kathy Hochul (Democratic incumbent Governor) to give her official security detail for the October 8 gubernatorial race.

Gov. Hochul condemnedAttack “in the strongest terms possible,” adding such violent behavior “has no place in New York.”
