The US deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman spoke via video link to European journalists on Thursday, saying that the US must work with European countries to counter China’s growing threat to world order. Countering Beijing’s influence is important for preserving the European way of life, she claims.
Earlier, Washington called China the only nation that has both the will and ability to reshape the world order and threaten Western nations’ “shared vision”The future. Sherman now says China was a threat to Western values long before it supposedly aligned itself with Russia, which currently dominates the headlines in the West due to Moscow’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine.
“Even before President Xi [Jinping]President [Vladimir] Putin declared their ‘no limits’ partnership in February, the PRC [People’s Republic of China] has challenged Europe’s security, Europe’s economy and Europe’s values,”Sherman addressed journalists at Washington DC.
“While Beijing may be thousands of miles away… the PRC’s actions matter just as much for the future of Europe,”She said that Washington doesn’t seek to start a cold war with Beijing.
Although the US has no plans to do so, “sever [its] economy from the PRC,”Washington can’t just “rely on Beijing to change its behavior,”Sherman continued his call for European countries to work with Washington on matters such as supply chains, and he did so while continuing.
