New ‘super mutant’ COVID strain prompts EU to seek air travel ban — Analysis

The European Commission has mooted stopping all air travel from southern Africa amid rising concerns about a variant of Covid-19 that appears to have mutated to circumvent the body’s immune system.

In a tweet on Friday, EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen saidThe bloc will take emergency measures.

In close collaboration with Member States and the Commission, the Commission will recommend activating the emergency brake in order to prevent air travel from southern Africa due to concern variant B.1.1.529.,” she said.
