Many Are Stranded by the War in Ukraine, From Students to Soccer Players, and Reportedly a Hollywood Name

On Friday morning, missiles continued to fall on Kyiv in Ukraine. Foreigners and Ukrainians fled the Russian attack.

On Thursday, photos and videos were shared on social media showing long lines at stations for buses and trains in Kyiv. It is Ukraine’s capital city and the most populous with three million residents. Kyiv’s major roads were choked. On Thursday, several airports in the country were also attacked.

As embassies in foreign countries scrambled for their citizens to safety, thousands have been crossing the borders into neighbouring nations.

Indian reports claim that almost 22,000 students from India were stuck in Ukraine Thursday. A flight from Air India that was headed to Kyiv on Thursday turned around and returned to Delhi. As Ukraine shut down its airspace, a large number of students gathered at India’s embassy in Kyiv to seek help.

Meanwhile, Brazilian soccer players for two of Ukraine’s largest teams—Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv—posted a video on Instagram asking for help from the Brazilian government to leave Ukraine.

“We are really desperate. We are going through chaos,” Shakhtar defender Marlon Santos wrote on Instagram.

Israeli embassiesTo help nationals flee the country, representatives from the region went to Poland, Slovakia Hungary, Hungary, and Romanian border crossings.

According to Philippine news reports, Poland has agreed to temporarily accept some Filipinos fleeing Ukraine.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv urged American citizens in Ukraine to depart immediately “if it is safe to do so using any commercial or other privately available ground transportation options.”

According to reports, Sean Penn is among the Americans visiting Ukraine. Vice Studios has confirmed the news. VarietyPenn made a documentary in support of the Russian invasion while he was there.

One Twitter user claimed that he was there as a journalist to cover the events in Ukraine. Australian Financial ReviewPenn and he were seen hiding in the basements of hotels, according to a picture posted by.

On social media, people are offering help for those fleeing. Christiaan de Vries, a Dutch student living in Poland, has exemplified these sentiments. “If anyone needs a bed for a couple days, do get in contact with me,” he tweeted.

 

It is not possible for everyone to leave. Ukraine has declared martial law. Male citizens 18-60 years of age cannot leave the country.

Fears exist that the Ukraine conflict could lead to a refugee crisis. Frantic preparations are being made by the governments of the five countries that border Ukraine—Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova. They also announced their willingness to accept Ukrainian refugees.

Ireland waives visa requirements for Ukrainians. The E.U. vowed to assist Ukrainian refugees.
