Liz Truss becomes new UK prime minister

Boris Johnson’s top post will now be filled by Foreign Secretary

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss is the chosen leader of the Conservative Party, and will be becoming the next prime minister.

Sir Graham Brady (chair of the 1922 Committee of Backbench Tory MPs) announced the winner of the race for two months between Truss, former finance minister Rishi Unak.

Nearly 160,000 Conservative party members participated in the last stage, which ended on Friday.

Truss will take over from Boris Johnson at the 10 Downing Street. Johnson resigned on July 7, following a string of scandals that have been widely reported and resignations from the cabinet.
