Marjorie Taylor Greene says gender reassignment therapy for youngsters amounts to “child abuse,” and calls for tough new laws
Marjorie Taylor Greene (Congresswoman) has introduced legislation to prohibit hormone therapy for puberty and blockers in the US. It also seeks to penalize those who provide such treatment by putting them behind bars.
Greene is a Republican Georgia congresswoman who wants to ban over a dozen procedures including those performed on minors. “for the purpose of changing the body of such individual to correspond to a sex that differs from their biological sex.”
Under Greene’s bill, anyone providing treatment of this kind would face up to 25 years in prison. Federal funding would be prohibited for these procedures.
The bill titled ‘Protect Children’s Innocence Act’ has been co-sponsored by 14 House Republicans, according to The Hill news website.
It is illegal to provide minors with so-called gender affirming care “really child abuse,” Greene said on the Fox News show ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight’ on Thursday.
“These kids are too young to make these awful decisions that will affect them and will be permanent for the rest of their lives,”Greene has been added.
Alabama passed this year a law making it a crime for minors to be prescribed hormones or puberty blocking drugs. A federal judge stopped certain sections of the law’s implementation in May. He ruled that lawmakers did not have enough evidence to prove that minors are being prescribed transitional medication.
In its last report, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that “youth who identify as transgender have access to comprehensive, gender-affirming, and developmentally appropriate health care that is provided in a safe and inclusive clinical space.”
