Colin L. Powell, former secretary of state and military leader, dies at 84


Colin Luther Powell was born in New York’s Harlem neighborhood on April 5, 1937. Luther’s parents were Maud Ariel McKoy and Luther, who emigrated to Jamaica from their 20s. They found employment in the garment district. The family relocated to South Bronx in 1941. There, Colin and Marilyn, his older sister, were raised by a diverse community of West Indians, Italians, and Jews.
