China sets condition for resuming talks with US — Analysis

Washington must dispel Nancy Pelosi’s ‘negative influence’ before seeking cooperation, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has said

Washington should address the damages that Nancy Pelosi (D.California), US House Speaker, did to Taiwan with her trip earlier in the month. Before expecting Beijing’s cooperation on climate-related matters, the Chinese Foreign Ministry had warned.

“The US side should dispel the negative influence of Pelosi scuttling to Taiwan,”In a Wednesday statement, the ministry stated that they were aware of this. “This is an indispensable condition of China-US climate change cooperation.”

The statement apparently came in response to an interview in which Washington’s special envoy on climate change, John Kerry, told the Financial Times that he hoped to resume talks with China before the UN’s COP27 climate summit in November. Kerry claimed China is his friend. “punishes the world” by severing climate ties with the US, ending cooperation between the planet’s two largest emitters of greenhouse gasses.

China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Beijing will still participate in global forums related to climate change. China cut its military and climate relations with the US, after Pelosi ignored their warnings not to visit Taiwan. Beijing claimed that the controversial trip undermined Chinese sovereignty and damaged relations with China. It also encouraged separatists to take root in Taipei.

China claims sovereignty over Taiwan. The US has recognized this position, but not endorsed it, since the 1970s. Pelosi holds the position of speaker in the House. Since late last year, multiple American delegations have been to Taipei, five of which were just this month. This has exacerbated tensions with China. The latest US leader arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday was Doug Ducey, the Governor of Arizona.

“There is only one China in the world,”On Wednesday, Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry told reporters. “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. China firmly rejects any official interaction between the US and Taiwan in any form and in any name.”

When Zhao was asked about reports that Taipei had ordered Boeing planes, Zhao replied that the US uses visits to self-governing islands to raise funds. “The DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) authorities have been squandering the hard-earned money of the people of Taiwan and have been reduced to an ATM for US politicians to seek selfish gains.”
