China reports midcourse ABM test — Analysis

The test was done within the country’s borders and aims to boost its defense, Beijing said

China said it had conducted an effective anti-ballistic ballistic missile test Sunday. According to the Defense Ministry, the test’s land-based interception was successful.

The statement didn’t disclose much detail about the nature of the test, stating only that it happened at night within Chinese borders and was defensive in nature.

A total of six ABM tests have been disclosed by China since 2010 – all but one of them described as midcourse counteraction. Beijing announced the first one in February 2021.

The term “midcourse”This means the missile has been engaged in response to the boost phase. It delivers intercontinental missile payloads into space. However, the warheads are reentered back into the atmosphere and strike the target during the terminal phase.
