Due to the Omicron epidemic, US has banned South African visitors to its seven neighboring countries.
Joe Biden, President, has lifted the travel ban which barred travelers from eight African countries. This was due to progress in understanding Omicron and the Covid-19 variants that created the restriction.
Biden stated Tuesday that the travel ban controversial will be lifted on Friday, three months after its imposition.
Critics claimed the ban was racist. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called it racism “travel apartheid.” Biden said his previous order was necessary to buy time while Washington spooled up plans to fight the new strain.
