African nation to destroy 1 million Covid-19 vaccines — Analysis

A top official in health has stated that Nigeria will destroy one million doses AstraZeneca vaccinations against Covid-19. He also promised that they would no longer accept jabs having a short shelf-life.

According to Dr. Faisal Shuaib (Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA), the vaccines beyond their use date have been withdrawn. They will also be destroyed according to protocol.

Shuaib, during briefings, assured that no Nigerian citizen has been given expired jabs. He stated that the country would not accept any more vaccines with a fast expiration date, like it had previously.

So far, only 3.9 million of Nigeria’s population of over 211 million people have been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, according to Shuaib.

Only 496 individuals received the booster shot in addition to their first two.

According to reports, Nigeria’s government last week confirmed that approximately one million doses AstraZeneca jabs, which it had received in Europe under the COVAX initiative for vaccine sharing, were expired.

The media said the vaccines were within four to six weeks of expiry when they arrived and couldn’t have been put to use in time.

Nigerian Health Minister Dr. Osagie Elanire had previously pointed out that the donation of excess Covid-19 jabs having short- or expiring shelf life has been done “of great concern internationally.”
