Too Busy to Grow? Chris Sund on Why Ordinary Days Decide Where You End Up

Being too busy ranked among the top reasons people gave for falling short in Sund’s research. His chapter Time Is Your Edge makes the case for the days that seem not to matter.
Busy has become a default answer. Ask people why a goal is still on hold and many will say they simply have not had the time. Bestselling author and keynote speaker Chris Sund heard that answer in his own research, and he takes it seriously without accepting it as the end of the story.
For his book, You Are Capable of More: A No-Excuses Guide to Becoming Your Best Self, Sund surveyed more than 200 working adults. When they named what holds them back, self-doubt and fear of failure came first, being too busy came second and getting comfortable came third. Ninety-two percent said they believe they are capable of more than they are doing, and 78 percent said they delay action on things that matter to them.
Sund points out that none of those barriers is about ability.
Most of Life Is Ordinary Days
In the book, the chapter Time Is Your Edge makes the case that most of life is made of ordinary days, and that how those days are spent decides where a person ends up. It is a hopeful idea for anyone who feels stretched thin. Progress does not wait for a perfect week or an empty calendar. It is built in the days that seem unremarkable.
“There is more inside of you than you have been using,” Sund said. “Most of the time the next level is not about learning something new. It is about finally acting on what you already know.”
Like every chapter in the book, Time Is Your Edge ends with actions readers can take that same day. The closing Playbook helps readers put the lessons to work in their own lives.
Lessons From a Demanding Field
Sund knows something about busy. He has spent more than a decade in healthcare staffing, an industry where the work is personal. Every open position on the other end is a hospital unit, a clinic or a patient who needs care. When COVID arrived, healthcare staffing became one of the most demanding places to work in the country almost overnight. Hospitals needed clinicians faster than ever, the ground shifted every week, and the team had to keep showing up while carrying the weight of it themselves.
What he learned is that in moments like that, people do not need a perfect plan. They need someone who will make the next decision, own it and keep everyone moving. He carries the same principle into personal growth. You do not have to have everything figured out to begin. Start where you are, work with what you have and take the next step.
“Most people don’t fail,” Sund said. “They leave too early.”
A Mission Bigger Than a Book
Sund’s personal mission is to help as many people as possible become the best version of themselves. He has spent his career hiring, developing and promoting people, and he has watched capable people hold back again and again until someone told them they were ready. His message is to stop waiting for permission and start taking ownership.
“My goal is to help people become the best version of themselves,” Sund said. “Self-doubt does not have to disappear for you to move forward. It can come along for the ride. It just does not get to drive.”
That mission is why the message of You Are Capable of More lives beyond the book, on a website with free assessments, articles and resources anyone can use to take their next step, whether or not they have read the book. For people who feel too busy, the free assessment offers a practical way to see which barriers are holding them back and where to focus first.
