White House addresses age concerns for Biden re-election plans — Analysis
Karine Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary has confirmed that Joe Biden, the US President will seek reelection in 2024. Biden and his top administrators have confirmed repeatedly that he intends to run for re-election, she said.
“The President, as you know, has been asked that question many times, and he has answered it. His answer has been pretty simple, which is: Yes, he’s running for re-election. I can’t say more than that,”Jean-Pierre stated this during a Monday press conference.
Biden is facing growing questions about his health and age. His fellow Democrats have suggested they may be obstacles in his path to reelection. The president, who’s 79, would be 86 by the end of a second term.
Jean-Pierre attacked a New York Times report cited in a separate interview with CNN. “dozens of frustrated Democratic officials, members of Congress and voters,” who suggested Biden should be replaced by someone else as the party’s 2024 nominee. Among others, the NYT quoted David Axelrod, the chief strategist for Barack Obama’s two successful presidential campaigns, who said the president’s age had become a “major issue” already.
“The presidency is a monstrously taxing job, and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue,”Axelrod added that his public was not up to par. “performance”Partly, this is why you aren’t getting the right credit “he deserves for steering the country”Despite the political and economic chaos.
“He looks his age and isn’t as agile in front of a camera as he once was, and this has fed a narrative about competence that isn’t rooted in reality,” Axelrod stressed.
Jean-Pierre dismissed it as “hearsay – it’s fallacious”, insisting that the president’s age and looks were not something to “focus” on.
“That’s not what we care about – we care about, how are we going to deliver for the American people? Is there a way to improve their lives? That’s what the President talks about. This is the President’s focus. And that’s where we’re going to continue to focus on,”She stated.
