Vatican sexual abuse trial clears Gabrielle Martinelli, altar boy who served the pope

This trial was a first for the Church. Traditionally, abuse allegations have been handled behind closed doors, or in canonical courts, which allow offenders to be ordered to penitence or defrocked. But in this case, because the alleged abuse took place within the city-state’s territory, the Vatican prosecutors had the opportunity to pursue criminal charges. In 2019, Pope Francis wrote a special provision which allowed for the trial.
