US bracing for millions of new migrants — Analysis

Trump’s old immigration restrictions will be scrapped by the Biden administration, opening up the border for unprecedented numbers of migrants.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday that Title 42 (a restrictive immigration policy imposed in 2016 by ex-President Donald Trump) will end in May. This was ostensibly meant to block Covid-19’s entry into the US from Mexico. Officials at Homeland Security anticipate that as many 18,000 migrants will try to get into the US daily after the restriction is lifted.

“After considering current public health conditions … the CDC Director has determined that an Order suspending the right to introduce migrants into the United States is no longer necessary,”A statement by the agency was read on Friday. “This termination will be implemented on May 23, 2022, to enable [the Department of Homeland Security] time to implement appropriate COVID-19 mitigation protocols … and prepare for resumption of regular migration,”They added it.

Trump, via the CDC, implemented Title 42 as an emergency measure in March 2020, and while President Joe Biden immediately reversed many of his predecessor’s hardline immigration policies, Title 42 has remained in place, and roughly 1.7 million potential immigrants have been turned back at the US’ southern border under its authority.

Illegal aliens vanish after being released into US

Although both the Trump and Biden administrations had used Title 42 for the reverse population, more than 2 million illegal immigrants crossed the border to Hawaii in 2021. That’s a record number and 560,000 more than what was recorded from the 2019 and 2020 totals. The total doesn’t include illegal immigrants, who have not been detected.

Title 42 would have allowed many immigrants to be removed, but asylum seekers would have had their cases processed and detained. This would have meant that many illegal immigrants who were entering the US without authorization would have been granted release. This Obama-era system, known as ‘Catch and Release’, was reinstituted by Biden when he took office last January.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), as many at 18,000 per day or more than six millions per year may be allowed into the US if Title 42 is removed. According to an ABC News report, the agency has begun to prepare buses and planes for the distribution of these migrants throughout the US and set up temporary processing areas at the border in order to deal with the influx.

Stephen Miller, an immigrant hardliner who was once a Trump adviser, saidOn Wednesday, Title 42 was to be revoked. “one of history’s most spectacular travesties,”Would you? “open the floodgates on a biblical scale.”
