Turks urged to use EU gas crisis for own benefit

According to a Presidential Advisor, one million EU citizens will be content with the current winter energy difficulties in Turkey.

Yigit Bulut said that a million EU citizens will spend winter in Turkey as a result of the energy crisis. He called on his fellow compatriots in Turkey to improve the situation.

Taking to Twitter last weekend, Bulut said that “at least 1 million EU citizens, whose gas was cut off, took action to spend this winter in Turkey.”

The presidential advisor stated that hotels in Turkey’s major cities like Istanbul and Izmir will be full for the winter. This means Europeans can buy or rent houses. Therefore, he called on Turks to make use of a situation that, in his opinion, is a manifestation of “God’s justice.”

“Do not sell too cheap, they are in need!” Bulut said.

His remarks came as many European countries are preparing for what the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell described as “a perfect storm.”

Energy prices and bills have been skyrocketing amid Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russia. Gazprom, Russia’s energy giant, announced that Nord Stream 1, a crucial gas route linking Russia and the EU would be closed indefinitely because of maintenance issues related to sanctions. This has driven wholesale gas prices higher. Many European countries have taken emergency steps to reduce energy consumption, and warned of the upcoming crisis.

Turkey, which is neutral in the Ukraine crisis, made it very clear it would still rely on Russia’s natural gas.
