Making Hits From Your Bedroom: The PinkPantheress Example

Whether or not the health crisis played its part, there is no doubt that more people create music from their home today than there were before. With PinkPantheress winning the BBC Sound of 2022, it confirms the tendency, as she invents her hit songs sitting in her bedroom. Here is a look at who this young woman is and how she is helping to change the way music is created, in 2022.

Learning and creating Music from Home

The virtual world is gaining more and more space into every part of our lives. Whereas we used to listen to music on the radio, or buying CDs, we now turn to mobile apps such as Spotify to hear our favourite songs. But the distribution route is not the only thing that is changing these days. The way to learn and create music is also going through modifications, as people learn to play and read music sheets on the internet with Metronautapp, which is a good example.

But to create music, you don’t necessarily need to learn how to play an instrument either anymore, as the PinkPantheress has shown us throughout the last year; her being the latest of a long line of artists using music samples to create their own songs. For those who wonder if that is enough, let’s just emphasize on the fact that she’s just won BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2022. That and the fact that she placed two songs in the Top 40 last August, is a good indicator of how her career is only starting to take off. You can also add that Coldplay covered one of her songs, which in itself is quite meaningful.

New Singers and Music Creators being born on Social Media

PinkPantheress came out to the public through TikTok. This young woman in her twenties started launching her songs on this social media, only last year. She immediately became a phenomenon. When you hear her musical creations, you immediately recognize her breathy vocals, which she places over retro garage samples. This self-made fame has rendered her even more popular, thanks to the fact that she remains somewhat a mystery to her listeners. In fact, she doesn’t go through the press to give out info about herself. Therefore, all the public knows, at this stage, is that she comes from Bath and lives in London where she is studying cinema. Even her real name is unknown and her face popped-up only a few weeks back, in her videos.

Social Media has become a new distribution route for musicians, singers and DJs. It is the most direct channel that they can use, in order to be heard. Although you need to have some sense of how social media work to get to PinkPantheress level, the most important element remains to be able to create great songs. When that is the case, it can catch on pretty quickly, worldwide. In fact, that is the beauty of social media. You don’t have to wait for a producer to discover you. You just need to bring the content you create, straight to the masses. Just ask PinkPantheress about it.
