France’s Scientific Council has said it expects to see hundreds of thousands of new Covid-19 cases every day in January, with the highly contagious Omicron variant taking hold over the country and dismantling French society.
Arnaud Fontanet, an epidemiologist from the Scientific Council who advises France, spoke at a Thursday press conference. He warned that there would be a tsunami of Covid-19-related infections by January.
“It is expected that there will be hundreds of thousands of cases per day in January,”Fontanet added that Omicron was already available. “well established on French territory.”He stated that this variant will be the dominant strain at the end of 2021.
Omicron may even be the catalyst for the emergence “disorganization of society” in France, according to Jean-François Delfraissy, the president of the Scientific Council.
Experts warn of the fact that the virus may already be infecting certain populations, particularly those aged over 50. Fontanet says the virus will be most active among young people, then spread to the older generation.
BFMTV reported that in the last week, only 1% were found to have the virus in Paris, the capital region Ile-de-France.
