FBI uncovers ‘ISIS plot’ to assassinate George W. Bush

According to the FBI, the man had the intent to bring ISIS agents into America to assassinate the ex-president.

In a conspiracy to kill former President George W. Bush, an Iraqi citizen living in the United States was charged. He was accused of plotting to aid members of Islamic State (formerly ISIS), terrorist group into the country and assassinate former President George W. Bush. 

An FBI terrorism task force arrested Shihab Ahmed Shihab Shihab, 52, on Tuesday for “aiding and abetting a plot to murder former United States President George W. Bush,” among other charges, according to the US Department of Justice. 

Shihab allegedly traveled to Dallas, Texas earlier this year to surveil Bush’s home, and accepted tens of thousands of dollars in late 2021 to help smuggle IS members into the country through the southern border while working with confidential FBI sources.

Shihab appeared in federal court later on Tuesday, and in addition to charges linked to abetting the attempted murder for a former US official – which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison – he has also been charged for attempting to illegally bring an individual into the country, which could result in a 10-year sentence.

According to the administration of the 43rd President, there were many claims made about Saddam Hussein’s government. They claimed that the Iraqi leader had weapons of mass destruction and posed an imminent threat for Europe. Also, they said it was secretly aligned against the US with Al-Qaeda terrorist group responsible for the attacks of September 2001. They used these false claims to justify to American people the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

NATO-led US occupation of the Middle East nation plunged it into chaos, leading to hundreds of thousands of dead and spreading instability throughout the region. The Islamic State is a Sunni terrorist organization that rose to power after the 2014 invasion. It attempted to establish a nation in Iraqi or Syrian territory.
