Ex-peer sexually assaulted boy and attempted to rape girl – UK court — Analysis

Nazir Ahmed was a Labour politician who has been found guilty of crimes committed over 50 years ago

UK court found Nazir Ahmed (formerly Lord Ahmed) guilty of serious sexual assault on a boy, and attempted rape on a girl aged 13 or under, in offences dating back to 1970s.

Sheffield Crown Court heard the Pakistan-born politician was just 17 at the time. Ahmed, a Pakistani-born politician, claimed in his defense that the charges were false. “malicious fiction,”A 2016 phone call between the victims proved that there was no truth to this story. “made up or concocted.”

One woman involved in that conversation told the jury about Ahmed’s attempt to rape and molest her in the 1970s.

Rosemary Ainslie from the Special Crime Division (CPS), praised the guilty verdict and said it was proof of her conviction. “where there is sufficient evidence, even in challenging cases, the CPS will bring a prosecution, put evidence before a jury and see rightful convictions,”Even if, like in the case above, the defendant held that a “position of power, influence and responsibility for some time in the House of Lords.”

Ahmed’s two brothers, Mohammed Farouq and Mohammed Tariq, were charged with the indecent assault of the same boy whom Ahmed had also abused, but deemed unfit to stand trial. He was released without bail until a sentencing hearing on February 4.

Ahmed has been accused of sexual misconduct before. After a report by the conduct committee, Ahmed was accused of emotionally and sexually exploiting a woman who sought his help. He was then forced to resign as Speaker of the House of Lords. 

Ahmed is the peer who was first recommended to be expelled. However, he resigned on his own before his peers could take him out of the post. The scandal that led to his downfall at the time was brought to public attention by an investigation carried out by the BBC program ‘Newsnight’.
