Clashes, arrests as hundreds protest against Covid mandates in Leipzig (PHOTOS, VIDEO) — RT World News

Hundreds of people took to the streets of the German city of Leipzig on Saturday to protest against the government’s Covid-19 measures. They faced police, counter-protests, and other law enforcement officers.

Leipzig was the scene of twelve protests, and a large force of police officers were deployed. On the streets of Leipzig, you could see armored police cars.

Over 1,000 protestors gathered near the Leipzig Opera in central Berlin to express their frustration with federal and regional measures to limit the spread Covid-19.

Protesters demanded “freedom”Protested the Covid-19-related measures “mandatory vaccination.” The police designated a second meeting area for the demonstrators at nearby Goethestrasse Street after the participants’ cap, restricted to one thousand people, was exceeded.

Footage by RT’s video agency Ruptly showed a tightly packed crowd occupying a large area not far from the Opera. German flags were waved and banners were held by people who read: ‘No to dictatorship’ ‘Freedom instead of despotism’.Officers inriot gear and water cannons deployed on the square helped to disperse the crowd.

A counter-demonstration involving around 800 people was organized near Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Concert Hall, just across the square from the Opera.

At a certain point, the crowd protesting the Covid-19 measures attempted to stage a march along the city’s ring-road. After protesters tried to march along the city’s ring-road, the police stopped them and said that there were no marches allowed because of Covid-19 restrictions.

It quickly became worse. Social media videos showed short, intense clashes between protesters and police during which some rally participants attempted to breach the cordon. In response, police used pepper spray.

The officers had already detained 24 persons they identified as being members of different right-wing movements before clashes broke out. “These people were taken into custody because of their behavior and the objects they were carrying,” the police saidOn Twitter

After the Saxony government had announced tightening Covid-19 restrictions to those who aren’t vaccinated due to rising infections, the demonstration took place. Only people who have been fully immunized and/or recently recovered from Covid-19 are allowed to enter indoor caterers, bars, clubs, and other events with over 1,000 participants.
