A “counterterrorism operation” in Afghanistan reportedly targeted Al-Qaeda leader Zawahiri
According to AP, Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri was killed in a drone attack in Afghanistan over the weekend. US President Joe Biden said he would make an announcement on Monday evening from the White House, even as he’s quarantining with Covid-19.
“Over the weekend, the United States conducted a counterterrorism operation against a significant Al Qaeda target in Afghanistan. The operation was successful and there were no civilian casualties,”In a background briefing, a top administration official spoke to reporters.
While Zawahiri’s name was not officially mentioned, AP reported it shortly thereafter, followed by the Washington Post.
