Abortion rights in US could be repealed, bombshell document shows — Analysis

A leaked Supreme Court document shows that abortion rights could be severely limited in the United States. This revelation sent shockwaves throughout the country.

Politico published a complete draft of Monday’s decision. It stated that the US supreme court voted against the Roe V. Wade abortion law.

In 1973, the landmark decision gave women the right to abort in their first trimester. They also had limited rights for the second. A 1992 ruling – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – upheld the rights.

Now a majority of the Supreme Court appears to be leaning towards overturning both decisions and returning “the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”

Roe made a terrible mistake from the beginning. The reasoning behind Roe was extremely weak and has led to disastrous consequences. Roe and Casey, far from leading to a national solution on the issue of abortion, have only inflamed division and exacerbated conflict.” Justice Samuel Alito wrote in a draft majority opinion.

Roe v. Wade was a case that the Supreme Court considered because of its connection to a case they heard last year. According to a Politico source “familiar with the court’s deliberations,” five Republican-appointed justices voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, and three Democratic-appointed judges are working on the dissent.

It is not clear how Chief Justice John Roberts will vote. He may also join an existing opinion, or create his own.” the outlet writes.

Roe V. Wade’s invalidation will enable 22 states to instantly outlaw abortion, provided that all necessary preparations for the court have been made.

In the past however, judges often altered their votes as a result of the deliberations. Expect the court to release its final decision sometime in June or July.

The leaked document, which is a mere draft of the decision, contains 98 pages. However, it has caused a sensation among anti-abortion advocates and supporters of abortion rights. They rushed to Washington, DC in just hours.

While abortion is still legal, tonight’s report makes clear that our deepest fears are coming true. It is now a critical time for abortion access. We don’t have a moment to spare – we must act now,” non-profit organization Planned Parenthood tweeted.

Nancy Pelosi is the House Speaker said that if Politico’s report is accurate, “the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton blasted the supposed decision of the Supreme Court as an “utter disgrace” and “a direct assault on the dignity, rights, & lives of women, not to mention decades of settled law.

Since the beginning, abortion has been one of the most controversial issues in the US. Pew Research Center surveyed 59% adults in 2021 to determine if abortion should become legal in all or most instances. Only 39% thought it should remain illegal.
