According to local fire and police officials, 46 victims were discovered dead in a tractor trailer located near San Antonio. According to authorities, the victims may have been migrants illegally entering the US.
William McManus of the San Antonio Police Department stated that officers received an alert from a witness. He saw multiple bodies within a partially-open trailer 18-wheeler parked in San Antonio.
Charles Hood, Chief Fire Officer, told reporters that sixteen people were rescued from heat-related illness and they treated them. “They were suffering from heatstroke and exhaustion,”He stated. Hood said that it appeared the trailer did not have air conditioning.
Three people were arrested by police for migrant smuggling.
“Migrants seeking asylum should always be treated as a humanitarian crisis, but this evening we’re facing a horrific human tragedy,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said.
Greg Abbott of Texas argued that the tragedy resulted from the “open-border policies”of President Joe Biden.
“These deaths are on Biden… They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law,”He tweet.
The border agent made 239 416 arrests last month along Mexico’s Mexican border, an increase of 2% from April. After making an unprecedented 1.73 million arrests last year, the US Customs and Border Protection is now on pace to make more than 2 million in fiscal 2022.
“As temperatures start to rise in the summer, human smugglers will continue to exploit vulnerable populations and recklessly endanger the lives of migrants for financial gain,”Chris Magnus, CBP Commissioner, stated this month.
