3 Dead in Indiana Mall Shooting. Witness Kills Gunman

GREENWOOD, Indiana — Three people were fatally shot and two were injured Sunday evening at an Indiana mall after a man with a rifle opened fire in a food court and an armed civilian shot and killed him, police said.

Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison stated that the man entered Greenwood Park Mall carrying a gun and several magazines of ammo and started firing at the food court.

Ison announced that Ison, a nearby Bartholomew County 22-year-old who was legally carrying a gun at the mall, shot and killed Ison.

Ison explained that the gunfire killed four females, and only one male. He didn’t immediately know the specific gender or age of those who were killed.

A 12-year-old girl, said he was among those injured. They are both in stable condition.

Ison claimed that police confiscated the backpack, which was found in a toilet near the food court.

At 6:45 p.m., officers went to the mall for information about the shooting.

After the shooting at Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood (Indiana), on Sunday July 17, 2022 that resulted in the death of a police officer, law enforcement officers waited outside.

“The real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop the shooter almost as soon as he began,” Ison said.

In 2022, the mass shooting in Las Vegas was only one of many disturbing events. Recent months have seen mass killings in schools, churches and grocery stores, as well as a Highland Park July Fourth Parade. Still, the reality of America’s staggering murder rate can often be seen more clearly in individual deaths that rarely make the news.

The investigation is being assisted by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and other agencies.

“We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country,” Indianapolis Assistant Chief of Police Chris Bailey said.

Authorities said there was no danger to the area on Sunday night.

Greenwood is located in Indianapolis’ south suburbs and has approximately 60,000 residents. Mayor Mark Myers asked for “prayers to the victims and our first responders.”

“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Myers said in a statement.

According to authorities, they promised more information Monday.
