17 dead as rural community flattened — Analysis

According to the government, on Thursday, a motorcycle crashed into a truck transporting explosives to the gold mine at Apiate. A blast erupted after the collision, which destroyed a small rural village.

According to police, the bike had been crushed under the truck that was en route to Chirano’s gold mine. This is run by Kinross Gold Corporation of Toronto (K.TO). Kinross confirmed that they were monitoring the rescue operation.

On footage posted online, you can see piles of wood where once stood buildings. A large crater is also visible at the scene of the explosion. The hole can also be seen from the outside by curious observers. 

According to the government, at least 17 victims died in the explosion and 59 others were hurt. People in critical condition were transported to Accra for treatment. The government stated that rescue efforts are still underway.

Seji Amedonu (deputy director general, National Disaster Management Organisation) stated that approximately 500 buildings had been destroyed.

Minister of Lands and Natural Resources released a statement saying that they were investigating the incident and would assess the circumstances of the blast and determine if regulations regarding explosives transportation had been followed.
