Kiev’s attempts to take the initiative and advance in the south of the country have failed and resulted in heavy losses, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Thursday.

The Ukrainian forces lost over 350 personnel, as Russian warplanes and artillery were used for kinetic action against Kiev’s forces over the last 24 hours, the ministry’s spokesman said during a daily briefing.

According to the statement, Kiev lost 31 tanks and 22 infantry fighting vehicle, 18 other types, 8 armed pickup trucks, 17 other military vehicles, as well as 21 tanks.

The long-rumored offensive by Ukraine to seize territory in Russia’s south was launched this week. While Kiev claims to have captured certain villages, the officials of Ukraine were mostly unwilling to discuss the specifics, such as its cost and secrecy.

According to the Russian side, this action was a disaster for Kiev. On Wednesday, a Russian military briefing stated that Ukraine had lost more than 1,200 soldiers to Russian fire and many pieces of its military hardware in one day.
