Ezgi Guildar wanted to know why Andrey Melnik is not fighting for his homeland but studying in Berlin.
Ukraine’s outgoing ambassador to Germany, Andrey Melnik, called a left-wing German politician “inhuman,” “pro-Putin,”“heartless”for asking why his son chose to study in Berlin instead of fighting for his country as most men his age were forced to by Kiev.
“Why is Melink’s son actually studying in Berlin and not fighting for his country in Ukraine and our freedom?”Ezgi Guildar, member of Die Linke (The Left), asked this question via Twitter on Saturday.
Guyildar’s reference to “our freedom” was likely laced with a heavy dose of sarcasm, as Guyildar herself has bitterly opposed her country’s arming of Ukraine and sanctioning of Russia, both of which Melnik has championed.

Melnik did not address why his son is not fighting in Ukraine, despite the diplomat’s repeated insistence that Germans bankroll Kiev’s military. The student may have been eligible to be exempted from service. Melnik has insulted German hosts repeatedly over the past months. He has also ridiculed anybody suggesting a diplomatic solution for Ukraine’s conflict. The outgoing ambassador’s comments on Merkel were the latest in a long line of scandals and controversies, including commemorating Nazi-collaborating war criminals, telling German academics to “go to hell,”Defending Israel, Poland and the Holocaust with revisionism.
