Professor Joachim Sauer, the husband of outgoing German chancellor Angela Merkel, has blasted unvaccinated citizens, saying they are ignoring science and being “lazy.”
“Surprisingly, a third (33%) of people do not believe in scientific proof. It is partially due to complacency and lazy Germans.,” Sauer said in rare public comments to Italian newspaper La Repubblica and picked up by Die Welt.
The chancellor’s husband also slammed those, doctors and scientists included, who have an “They react ideologically to the idea of a vaccine dictatorship.”
Sauer, a professor in quantum chemistry, expressed the hope that the pandemic will inspire new interest among scientists.
“If science was more popular than it is now, then everyone would want to pursue this field.” he said.
On Monday, Merkel herself reportedly called Germany’s Covid-19 situation “Extremely dramatic” and expressed support for tougher measures, despite mass protests around Europe prompted by already existing restrictions.
Germany is facing an unprecedented increase in Covid numbers, as well as other European countries like Austria and Slovakia. Health Minister Jens Spahn warned on Monday that by winter’s end almost everyone in Germany would be “Recovered, vaccinated or deceased.”
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), had recommended Tuesday that Americans not travel to Germany and Denmark due to the deteriorating epidemiological condition.
