With over 6.2 million people estimated to have died from Covid-19 and its comorbidities over the course of the pandemic, it is possible that the world has yet to see the worst, Gates warned in an interview with the Financial Times published on Sunday, just days before his new book, titled ‘How to Prevent the Next Pandemic’, is set to hit shelves.
“We’re still at risk of this pandemic generating a variant that would be even more transmissive and even more fatal,”Gates warned. This deep-pocketed philanthropist reiterated the call for a global emergency management team, operating under the acronym GERM. It would have an annual budget at least $1Billion. Gates stated that the money required for this initiative will be at least $1 billion annually. “very small compared to the benefit,” and called it a test of the world leaders’ ability to “take on new responsibilities.”
He spoke out about the idea at a TED Talk Vancouver last month. His book also describes that he anticipates the group will include at least 3,000 physicians, epidemiologists and policy- and communications experts as well as diplomats working under the WHO’s direction.
Gates’ book received praise from WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who fully agreed with the software tycoon’s insistence that “we must act on Covid-19’s lessons and innovate so that we can deliver swift, equitable health solutions to prevent the next pandemic.”
Although Gates has not been certified as a doctor and has not even completed college, his enormous wealth enabled him to control global health policy through the Gates Foundation. This foundation is the biggest private contributor to global healthcare, trailing only the US government.
Gates is a familiar name when discussing Covid-19. This is not just because his foundations have poured millions into the development and distribution vaccines but also because of another TED Talk from 2015.
