Archer Daniels Midland
This billion-dollar company is in total control of what happens to Elian.
It owns a $65 million food refinery in Cuba through a subsidiary in Spain
and it wishes to build another without European involvement as soon as
the U.S. lifts its trade embargo.
Gregory Craig
This lawyer has taken charge of Elian and controls his every action, including
who he sees and where he lives. He has gotten this power because 1) he
is the attorney for Archer Daniels Midland and 2) for Bill Clinton (notably
during the impeachment trial). He is a trusted lieutenant who is donating
his services to Elian’s father. Although the father is very poor, this
high-priced lawyer is now spending his entire time representing him and
acting as a babysitter, even taking warm, cozy pictures of father and son.
Craig is a member of the 170-lawyer firm of Williams and Connolly, which
lists Archer Daniels Midland as a client on its website.
Andrew Young
A Director of Archer Daniels Midland. Also President of the National Council
of Churches. Formerly Ambassador to the UN and Mayor of Atlanta.
National Council of Churches
This is Andrew Young’s organization, which has led the efforts to return
Elian to Cuba. It is a liberal organization of "mainline" Protestant churches
which have been losing a large number of members over the last twenty years
because of their extreme liberal slant. It has serious money troubles and
could use financial help from ADM. Its former General Secretary, Joan Campbell,
has come out of retirement to raise the money to pay Attorney Gregory Craig
through special offices at its affiliate, the United Methodist Church.
But auditors at the Methodist group ordered in May that it be sent back
to the National Council. ADM’s president gave the Council $100,000 last
year. (For detailed discussion of their role, see their site at http://bruno.ncccusa.org/news/faq.html)
Barry University, Miami
The owner of Archer Daniels Midland gives millions of dollars to this University
whose president is the nun who invited Elian’s grandmothers to use her
home to visit with Elian. The owner’s wife is a graduate of the school
and was president of its Board of Trustees. It has named the Andreas School
of Business after him. The nun has sided with the relatives in Miami after
witnessing the visit with the grandmothers. The American Council of Churches
is angry at her for not going along with their plans and says, "We were
deeply disappointed that Sister Jeanne abandoned the role to which she
had been called…" |
