Wellesley's Liberal Clergy Are In Trouble
— They Attempt to Speak for Catholic Church
— Unitarians Were Taught to Infiltrate Local Clerics
by J. Edward Pawlick
Publisher, Massachusetts News

April 15 -- The liberal clergy of the town of Wellesley are embarrassed.

After my article was mailed to the residents of Wellesley concerning the Unitarian's endorsement of homosexuality, the liberal clergy in that town wrote a letter to the Wellesley Townsman in which eight of them characterized the article as a "wild, free-swinging attack."

They attempted to include the Catholic Church in their epistle by obtaining the signature of a coordinator at the Catholic Chaplain's Office at Newton Wellesley Hospital. They signed her name, "Ann Lomoto, Newton Wellesley Hospital Catholic Chaplaincy."

This deception worked and the newspaper reported that their letter was signed by "nine members of the local clergy" including "Catholic congregations."

However, Ms. Lomoto says she signed only as an individual.  She had no authority to say anything on behalf of the Catholic Church, particularly when the letter was against the teachings of that church.

The letter from the clergy was signed by clerics from the Congregational, Episcopal, Methodist, Unitarian Churches and a rabbi from a Reform Jewish Synagogue plus the Director of Spiritual Life at Babson College.

Liberal Clergy Stray from Bible Teachings

In the next issue of the Townsman, I replied:

"It's interesting that all these Christian clergy are aligning themselves so closely with the Unitarians, the vast majority of whom believe the following:  'We find insufficient evidence for belief in the existence of a supernatural; it is either meaningless or irrelevant to the question of survival and fulfillment of the human race.  As nontheists, we begin with humans not God, nature not deity.'"  Humanist Manifesto II.   I continued:

"In addition, we learn that the Village Congregational Church doesn't like the Biblical account about Adam and Eve so they're presenting an opera on May 9 which fabricates a new story.  Under their theology, anyone can create his own version of the world's beginning.  What did they preach last Sunday at Easter?  Was there a Resurrection at their church or is that also a 'myth?'

"This is the outcome of a Christian church that, like the Unitarians, no longer believes the Bible.

"It's also interesting that many Jews are saying they feel much closer to Bible-believing Christians than they do to Reform Synagogues such as Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley.

"Almost all of the people who signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and gave us this wonderful country were Bible believing Christians.  If they were in Massachusetts today, they would be vilified."

Another problem for the clergy in Wellesley is that they failed to disclose a conflict of interest in that the wife of the President of the Unitarian Universalist Association, John A. Buehrens, is a priest at one of the signatories, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Wellesley.

Unitarians Were Taught to Infiltrate Local Clergy

The Unitarians have been taught to infiltrate their local ministers, as I reported in the Townsman on April 15:

"The Unitarians were taught at their annual meeting last year at a seminar ('Using Religious Voices to Confront the Religious Right') that they should infiltrate the local groups of ministers as a method of 'defeating the religious right.'  (See their website at www.uua.org/ga/ga98/jun29sexed1.html

"They were told, 'Before approaching individual churches, synagogues, mosques, etc., you should tap into already existing interfaith networks and denominational institutions....To get a particular church, synagogue, etc., on board your campaign, you will first need approval from the clergyperson in charge.....You will need to make decisions such as do I first approach congregations that are likely to be sympathetic, or do I focus instead on those with the greatest numbers and political resources?'

"Was this deception about the Catholics staged by the Unitarians as part of their national plan or were all of the liberal clergy in Wellesley involved?

"This deception is another indication that if the Christian men who founded this wonderful country were in Massachusetts today, they would be vilified by our society because the dirty little secret is —  they were the 'religious right.'"

 Unitarians Are Confused

The Unitarians are confused as to how they should respond.

None of them have yet revealed any inaccuracies in the articles.  Instead, they merely say they are "inaccurate, unfair and mean-spirited in tone."

They repeat the tired mantra that they affirm "the inherent worth and dignity of every person," as if I do not.

Their national office on Beacon Hill told the Townsman it is "advising all its member clergy in Massachusetts about Pawlick's latest mailing."  However, "there is no directive from UUA about responding to Pawlick — this is left up to each congregation."

According to the Sudbury Town Crier, "Rather than lending credibility to Pawlick's views by responding directly to them, [the minister in Sudbury] Rev. Katie Lee Crane said the church will use forums to promote gay rights and explain the beliefs of the Unitarian Universalist church."
