Mickey Mouselover is still concerned about the “inclusive” and “tolerant” people in his hometown of Newton who apparently have no concern for little animals.

Little Creatures Need Love in these Difficult Times

By Mickey Mouselover
October 2001

Everyone is angered by the terrible tragedy in New York and Washington. And they should be.

But how about the carnage of mice and other animals that occurs in our City of Newton every day? Why isn’t everyone also angered by that?

These defenseless little creatures are being electrocuted, killed by traps and poisoned in our own city every day of the year!

Who determined that the human animal is more important than other animals? Who determined that we have the right to be so cruel to all animals other than the human one?

We humans have no more right to be on this earth than any other animal does.

And the worst part is that our own City of Newton requires that this barbarism be done to mice in restaurants and other places. What kind of lesson does this send to the children in our schools?

I was hoping that we were making progress in Newton by making more people aware of the problems that our mice and rats face in trying to live, but I’m afraid that this new tragedy is going to make us forget the other animals that live on this earth. I’m afraid we’re going to start thinking only about our own species and forget all the others.

We may even stop being concerned about deer, coyotes and other large animals.

Even Mayor Cohen is sending signals that he is falling into this trap.

I worry that my fellow citizens may all become fascists and laugh at me. I would appreciate any encouragement you can give me in this difficult time.

Until next month, your friend, Mickey.
