'Stop the Hate Vigil' Accentuates Only Negative American Behavior

November 2001

The second annual Interfaith Vigil Against Hate Violence was held at the State House on Thursday. The usual cast of liberal politicians and liberal religious leaders extolled a crowd of faithful listeners to work against such "hate crimes" as racial epithets, domestic violence and discrimination against homosexuals in the state. The focus was entirely on negative behaviors and few mentions were made of the hate crimes perpetrated against America and the world on Sept. 11.

Speaking for the legislature was Rep. Jarrett Barrios (D-Cambridge), a homosexual activist, and representing the executive branch was Gov. Jane Swift's Chief Secretary Abner Mason, a Log Cabin Republican.

Few American flags were in evidence and rather than reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag or singing the national anthem or "God Bless America," the crowd heard the ringing of a Buddhist temple bell, a Hindu conch shell calling on Lord Krishna and the singing of "There's a New World Coming."
